Blue Heron
Founded in 2022 as North Alabama's first 100-miler, Blue Heron runs six repeats of a 15.5-mile core loop through Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge on soft crushed gravel and dirt roads — the final lap is shortened to 7 miles, totaling 100 miles with around 900 feet of gain. Aid stations sit at miles 3.3, 6.2, 9.3, 12.2, and 15.5; crew access is limited to the start/finish. The 31-hour cutoff applies to all distances. Race proceeds benefit the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association, and the great blue heron — a regular refuge resident — appears on finisher buckles.
