Heartland
Founded in 2000 by the Kansas Ultrarunners' Society, Heartland 100 Spirit of the Prairie runs an out-and-back through the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie of eastern Kansas — 99% backcountry gravel and dirt road with less than a mile of pavement through Cassoday. The route crosses open rangeland in Butler, Greenwood, and Chase counties, gaining 6,000 feet across rolling terrain with no technical trail. Twenty-two aid stations support runners over the 30-hour course limit; the 50-mile turnaround has a 14-hour cutoff. In 2025, 35 runners finished.
