Hell Hole
Founded in 2014 on the Jericho Horse Trail in Francis Marion National Forest, Hell Hole Hundred runs six loops of flat swamp terrain — a mix of dirt fire roads and single-track — through the South Carolina lowcountry in June. There are no climbs to speak of; the near-sea-level elevation brings no altitude challenge. Instead, the race weaponizes summer heat and humidity in a subtropical forest: snakes, alligators, and mud are routine. The 33-hour cutoff gives runners room, but improper hydration and electrolyte management drive most DNFs. In 2024, 12 runners finished; in 2025, just 7.
