Virginia · Woodstock
Old Dominion launched in 1979 when Pat and Wayne Botts organized an East Coast 100-miler alongside a horse endurance ride — 45 runners started that first June in 90-degree heat and 33 finished. The modern course loops through Massanutten Mountain and Fort Valley out of Woodstock, Virginia, with 14 major climbs and roughly 14,000 feet of gain across 90% unpaved trail and forest road. Sterling silver belt buckles — not prize money — go to finishers, a tradition from those first buckles cast for the 1979 event.
